National Committee on Public Health
The Public Health Committee is one of the newly founded in the executive board in the AMSB and one of the most progressive in its development. It gives a great opportunity to medical students to use their knowledge in the real life, to work with people, to build up a strong doctor-patient relationship before the graduation itself. Participating in projects in the field of health promotion and prevention the students cover people all ages - adults, students, teenagers and even children.
Projects:
Anti-hypertension capaign: Annually on the 17th of May (World day against hypertension). On hotspots in the city we measure the blood pressure of volunteers on the streets. If high levels are found we forward them to cardiology clinics for additional examination.
Anti-depression campaign: On the world's day against depression on hot spots in the cities we make consultaions with passers-by and explain them what is depression and the possibility of a medical solution.
Anti-tobacco campaign :
There are two dates worth noting - 20.11 - International Day without Tobacco Smoke and 31.05 World Day without Tobacco Smoke. There are public debates as the one on 31.05 is on a large scale - a real oratorical marathon of 12 hours. There is a stage on a busy public place, medical students participating in debates as the two arguing teams defend the opposite sides, and a great circulation of passing by people who stop and listen to the pros and cons. Those who leave their cigarette boxes have a chocolate instead. During the breaks models, who support our ideas, make a show and after each debate people from the public have the opportunity to stand up on the stage and share their thoughts. The whole event is reflected in the press and the national TV.
Medical students visit kindergartens and in a simple and comprehensible language explain to children everything about cigarettes and tobacco smoke.
Teddy Bear Hospital - already in Bulgaria
Teddy Bear Hospital It was for the first time organized in Bulgaria in the spring of 2004 in several medical universities. The medical students visited 6 kindergartens and the doctors examined about 200 teddy bears, barbies, rabbits, spidermen, even some trucks that happed to bewitched living creatures. It was a great success because all children and students were happy and pleased and the children learnt that the mask I used no to scare but to protect people, learnt to make a bandage around the head, arm or the legs and some practical advice how to keep away their toys from germs and other diseases.
